Spring/Summer Skiing
If you’ve recently purchased a Djärv Snowroller or have one that hasn’t had as many outings as you would have wanted it to this season, don’t fret. Yes the main European season is drawing to a close, but dig a little deeper into the mountains of Austria, Switzerland and Canada and you’ll find powdery offerings that will peak your interest 365 days a year.
Austria
St. Anton (May)
Home of reliable snowfall, St. Anton is able to stay open later than most other European ski resorts. Well-known for the après scene, enjoy an aperol in the sun on a perfect bluebird day and find yourself wondering why you didn’t take up spring skiing earlier. With over 300km of pistes to explore, there’s something for everyone.
Hintertux (Year-round)
The Hintertux Glacier is the only year-round ski resort in Austria. Even when the season hasn’t started for the main European resorts, or it’s drawing to a close, the Hintertux can offer skiers and snowboarders incredible conditions. One ski pass gives you access to 202kms of slopes - so the question is, who’s up for some summer skiing?
Switzerland
Zermatt (Year-round)
Zermatt is Europe’s highest summer ski area. Lifts are open year-round to take you to the top of the Klein-Matterhorn Glacier and is one of the few glaciers with enough gradient and vertical edrop to build a Super G and Downhill course.
Sweden
Riksgränsen (June)
Described as the world’s most northerly ski resort and ‘a heli-skier’s heaven’. Located North of the Arctic Circle, the lifts open in February and don’t close until June. It’s a hot-spot for free-riders and has a heli-skiing drop zone that’s bigger than the Netherlands.
Italy
Cervinia (Year-round)
Located at the foot of the Matterhorn at the border of Switzerland and Italy, you’ll find Cervinia. It’s home to perfect conditions, even in the height of summer thanks to the slopes’ exposure. You’re able to cross the border into Zermatt, Switzerland and enjoy some of the highest slopes in Europe or head to the neighboring mountain of Monte Rosa to ski the Theodul Glacier.
Norway
Fonna (May-September)
One of Europe’s most popular summer ski resorts, you’ll find Fonna 1200m above sea-level on the Folgefonna Glacier in Hardanger. The summer season spans May through to September and has good park features suitable for every kind of skier. Nature-buffs can also enjoy views of the world’s fourth largest fjord, Hardangerfjord and always combine their trip with the insta-famous hike up to Trolltunga.
Stryn (June-July)
Once named as one of the best pre-season training resorts by Italian slalom ski racer Alberto Tomba, Stryn offers perfect conditions for summer skiers. It’s a hugely popular ski-touring destination and has been a natural playground for snow activities since the 1930s. It’s located on the renowned scenic route of Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, so it’s perfect for soaking up the sights and the sun.
USA
Arapahoe (October-June)
A-Basin is home to some of the highest terrain in North America and boasts the longest season in Colorado running from October through to June. There's a slope for everyone to be found at Arapahoe, but with 75% of their runs being rated black or double black - it’s a confident skiers playground - find out why SKI Magazine rated them #1 for most challenging terrain in Colorado 2022.
Canada
Whistler (June-July)
When the Whistler season looks to be wrapping up, but you’re not ready to move on, head to the Horstman Glacier on Blackcomb Mountain. Recommended for intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders.
